 A novel way to cut your study expenses

It is quite common for students to seek admission to 4 year institutions for visa purposes and transfer out to a community college or a less expensive college after their first semester.

There is the perception that a student visa to attend a 2 year community college would be rejected.
These students, thus obtain a student visa based upon admission to a 4 year institution and then transfer out after the first term to community colleges around the USA.

Some XXX undergraduate students were recruited over the past 3 semesters from a country in Asia.
Soon after they arrive on campus,
1. They freely admit that their intent is to study only one semester there.
2. They have plans to transfer to community colleges, usually located in large cities, after their first semester.
3. When asked why they chose the first college, they indicated that it was one of the colleges which has the reputation of resulting in a successful visa application.
4. When asked why they are transferring to a community college, the answer has been that its cheaper and that they had friends/relatives nearby.
5. Some admit freely that the community college being in a large urban area afforded them the opportunity to work off campus, and such jobs were easy to find.
6.When asked why they would not stay, they say they could not afford the larger college

The Biomedical Engineering Student

As a senior biomedical engineering student at RPI, I am receiving a particularly well-rounded education in engineering, complemented by studies in the sciences and humanities. During my sophomore year, I became interested in dentistry and began to select courses that would prepare me for dental school. While this meant additional work, I improved my study skills, and I have earned a grade point average of 3.4 over the last three years. Because of this rigorous course load, I will be graduating this August instead of last May. I had planned on applying to dental school this fall for the 1988-89 entering class, but after receiving your letter earlier this month and subsequently speaking with the admissions office, I found that it was still possible to apply for the September 1987 entering class.

My interest in the health care field began while I was in high school. I was first introduced to many different aspects of the medical field as a member of the Medical Explorers. My further research experience in college has inspired me to enter the dental profession.

My background in biomedical engineering has introduced me to some of the practical applications of biomaterials in dentistry. Dentistry is a challenging field that would enable me to provide health care to many people. Oral health is a crucial part of well-being, and I believe that I can make a significant contribution to dental medicine. Though I anticipate that much of my time as a professional will be spent providing clinical care, I am determined to continue with researching new techniques for improved treatment.

My career goal is to specialize in the area of oral surgery. I am encouraged in this aspiration when I consider the achievements of the 1986 SDOS graduating class, where both the number and percentage of students admitted to post-graduate residency programs were higher than those for any other dental school in the country. Another thing that appeals to me about SDOS is the favorable ratio of staff to students, which undoubtedly enhances both individual instruction and the development of close relationships between students and instructors.

This summer, at RPI, I will be assisting Dr. Joan Smith, DDS, and Dr. Robert Adams, PhD, in determining the effect of magnesium on the crystal development of dental enamel in newborn rats. The rationale for this research is that magnesium is closely associated with acid solubility and, thus, potentially with the tooth-decay process. As a result of this research, I am already co-author of a poster presentation entitled “The Detection of Magnesium According to Developmental Age,” which was shown at the March 1987 meeting of the International Association of Dental Research. By the end of the summer, I should be co-author of at least two journal publications.

I would be pleased to join the distinguished class enrolling at SDOS in September 1987. Overall, I feel that SDOS can help me achieve my goals by preparing me to fulfill my obligation to myself, to society, and to the dental profession.

1. When are the intakes for Canada?

January and September. For Universities, the primary intake: September (Fall Semester). Very limited number of universities/institutions allow: January (Winter Semester).

Colleges, there are usually 3 intakes in a year: September; January and May.

Education in Canada is highly subsidised and very cost effective as compared to other countries. There are very few scholarships at the undergraduate level, although some universities do offer full scholarships and partial entrance scholarships that are primarily based on your academic performance. There are many more opportunities for scholarships at the graduate (M.Engineering/M.Sc.) and post-graduate (Ph.D.) level. Apart from these Indian students can also avail of scholarships offered by Indian education trusts & bodies.

8. Is there an application fee for the institutions in Canada?

Yes, most universities and colleges have an application fee that can vary from CDN$40 - $200. These fees must be submitted in the form of a Canadian Dollar draft or paid via a credit card along with the application.

9. How is the ranking of the Canadian institutes done?

There is no official or recognized ranking for educational institutions in Canada. Most educational institutions in Canada are publicly funded and provide quality education with worldwide recognition and acceptance.

Visa Procedure

All International students are required to obtain a Study Permit (Student Visa) before going to Canada for studies.

The Canadian High Commission uses the services of VFS (Visa Application Centres) in nine cities across India. Visa applications are accepted at the VFS centres and then forwarded to the Canadian High Commission for processing.

Documents Required for Student Visa

1. Completed Student Application Form,
2. Completed Supplementary Questionnaire for students and postdoctoral researchers,
3. Official letter of acceptance from Canadian university, college or Technical Institute,
4. Certificate of Acceptance from the province of Quebec (Only if you plan to study in province of Quebec),

6. Passport, valid for at least one year from the planned date of entry to Canada, plus valid passports of any accompanying dependants,

When to Apply

You must demonstrate that you will have enough money during your stay in Canada to pay for tuition fees and living expenses for yourself and any accompanying dependents, and return transportation for both yourself and your dependents.

11. Do all applicants have to face the visa interview?

An interview with a Canadian Visa Officer may be required. If an interview is required, these will be scheduled in advance at a time convenient to applicants.

The Statement of Purpose is the single most important part of your application. It should present a vibrant and original picture of your character and aspirations, creating a distinct and positive impression in the minds of the admissions officers in the critical but very short time your application is under discussion.

When looking over the following work plan keep in mind that there is no best way to write your statement, use your judging and creativity.

Step 1 Determine the purpose in writing the statement

Pay attention to the purpose throughout the statement so that extraneous material is left out.

**STEP 3 Getting Started

A. Recalling and analyzing experience - write short paragraphs on the following:

1. Pick a memorable accomplishment in your life. What did you do? How did you accomplish it?

2. What sort of important activities have you engaged in? With whom? what role did you play?

3. What work experiences have you had? What was your job? responsibility? How did you carry it out?

Now look over your paragraphs. What skills and qualities do you see that you possess? For example, consider working with others. Were you a leader? important “team” player?

Looking at what you have found, you can now look for skills and qualities that will help you in graduate school. What factors stand out?

NOTE: You will undoubtedly have more material than you can use. This is good, but you need to make strategic choices.

1.What career have you chosen? What factors formed this decision?

2. What evidence shows that this is a correct choice? That is, how can you show that this choice is realistic? (Personal experience in the field is a good place to begin.)

Remember, that while information on your past work is important, it is most relevant in explaining how it led you to focus on the problems that currently interest you. The admission committees are primarily concerned with learning about your current and future research interests.

Step 4 Organize your statement

Use transitions between paragraphs. Have meaningful transitions based on your organization, e.g., time-based, academic then applied work, etc. Don’t rely on phrases such as “In addition” to carry the reader to the next paragraph, but  do use this and other words (like later, furthermore, additionally, or moreover) for transitions within the paragraphs.

Step 5 Write, read, rewrite…

Write a rough draft in which you transform your outline into prose according to the organization you have chosen in Step 3 (do it without reading sample statements, you might get some really innovative ideas that way). Set it aside.  In the mean time read as many sample statements as you can, pay attention to how and in what good statements differ from bad ones, look at the good word combination, try to invent your own. Next day or a few days later, read your draft. If it still sounds good, make changes and additions according to what you have learned from sample statements and go to the next step. If not, rewrite it until it sounds right.

Step 6 Distribute, analyze, rewrite…

Put your draft from Step 4 away for a day or two, then reread it, make changes, proofread. Now it’s time to send or give your statement to all your friends whose knowledge of English is adequate, once again do (!!!) send your statement to your friends, acquaintances or just anybody you know in US, the more people read your statement the more comments and ideas you will receive from them, so don’t be shy - act!  After you receive all the feedback accumulate it, use what you feel is suitable and write your final version of the statement. Proofread it, give it to friends again, continue in this manner until it seems good enough or the deadline has approached.  The time and energy that you put into this activity should result in a personal statement that can be used, with minor modifications, for each university and/or scholarship to which you apply.

(9) Materials Technology : technologies related to the production of composite materials for structural functions in aircraft, spacecraft, undersea vehicles, and missiles.

(10) Information Security : technologies associated with cryptographic systems to ensure secrecy of communications.

(11) Lasers and Directed Energy Systems : technologies associated with laser-guided bombs, ranging devices, and countering missiles.

(12) Sensors : technology associated with marine acoustics, missile-launch calibration, night vision devices, and high-speed photographic equipment.
