Your Questions are answered here.

I frequently receive mail asking me to recommend names of universities.
Please note that as a policy I do not suggest a university’s name in the first instant.

However, if you do your homework and send me a list of universities where you intend applying I will advice you on your chance of being accepted to a particular program.Your academic details, and your required tests scores should be made available in order to properly asses your chances.
I prefer one communication from you detailing your complete information.
People are sending several letters each mentioning partial details.
Before you write to me please ask yourself as to what exactly you want from me.
If you have properly framed this question then ask as to what information will I need to answer it..
Give me answers to the above two questions to get help from me.

Everything required to select a university and to apply is given in this blog. So as they say ’seek and yee shall find it’

  16. Hi

I’m in the us, and I’m researching colleges here. Your entry “Rankings According to GPA Required” was the only site i could find that ranked colleges based on GPA. Is this the average GPA of incoming students? Also, do you know of a website or source were I can find the required GPA for any school, not just the 126 listed?

I noticed the GPA was out of 5.0. Mine is out of 4.0. Do you know of any conversions, etc?

Any help would be awesome. Thanks.

  19. hi i am from coe pune and our college implemented the absolute gpa scheme for grading
now while applying should i ask college to convert my gpa (which is 7.4)into percentile or anything else..?
it also happned that some student got E grade in some subject
which is held fail in US and
so his application was rejected inspite of having v good gre score……… so what should steps to be taken to avoid that?

  20. Mandar
I have mentioned elsewhere in this blog that applicants should submit their transcripts in the original format. Almost every university in America has it’s own experts assigned to evaluate foreign credentials. They have their own unique method of converting foreign credentials. So let the experts do this.
If I have given details about GPA in this blog it is to understand the concept of GPA so that you may select compatible universities.
Let me also inform you that some universities do not have provision for evaluating foreign credentials in that event they will ask you to get your tranccripts evaluted through some agencies. This will cost you some extra money.
My suggestion: avoid applying to these universities.

With your decent 68% academics I would suggest that you take GRE again provided you are confident that you can score around 1100.
This effort will get you a good university.

  28. Hi!
I completed my Bachelors degree in Engg (Electronics) in July 2006 from and am currently working as a Radio Frequency Engg for a nationwide Nokia - Siemens GSM Project.
I have an overall decent academic record from high school. My undergrad GPA was 3.56/4 and GRE score Q800+V630 AWA 4.0 … along with a decent statement of purpose , if I get two recommendatio letters from my college professors and one from the National Manager of the GSM Project, what would be my chances of getting into the MS program in Electrical Engg at a university like UC Los Angeles, USC or UC San Diego? or for that matter, which grad schools should I realistically apply to, I wouldnt kid myself applying to a place like Caltech or MIT with less than remarkable grades and no research publications to my name :)

  29. Ammara
    Good credentials.
You have a decent chance of being admitted to UCLA and UCSD.
A good chance for a admit to USC.
Try getting strong Recos. Write a SOP relevent to work you are doing.
In the meanwhile contact the professors working in your field.
Do not forget to apply to some more universities as well.
For Fall 2008 your application must go by November/December 2007.

With your credentials you can get admission provided you select universities prudently.
No doubt your GRE score is not compatible with your other credentials. However, this can be overcome by your research experience.
To be on the safe side you can consider taking GRE again. For better universities a score >1300 will be desirable.
If you cannot re-take GRE apply to a few safe universities as well.
To be considered for assistantships apply to PhD program.

Thank you for the clarity of the question.
It is a pleasure to promptly
attend to specific questions providing full details.
Karthik you have good credentials and you must take some risk. apply to UC-Berkeley.
Out of the universities you selected UWash,Columbia,Gtech require reconsideration in order to save cost of applying.
If you can afford it I suggest you apply to all.
I am asking you to apply to USC as a backup.
Now about the applying strategy. Although you have written that you want to apply for MS I suggest you consider applying for PhD as well for financial aid shall be forthcoming if you are admitted to a doctoral program.
Out of these universities select 6 which are your second choice and you will go there only if you do not get admission to any of the other 7 schools.
Apply to these 6 for a PhD program with a stipulation you will go to these only if you get full financial support.
To the other 7 schools apply for a MS program but do ask for financial help from them as well.
After you get the admission decision decide on where you want to go. Ofcourse financial help should be your primary consideration.
    Good Luck

  76. Thanks a lot NBS for your prompt reply.

    >Out of the universities you selected UWash,Columbia,Gtech require reconsideration in order to save cost of applying.

By this do u mean that their acceptance rates are usually very low and hence it would a waste apping there ?

  79. Hello NBS,
    thanks for your reply.

  80. Neeta
You did not mention your percentage in B.Sc neither I am aware of your research interest.
However, you have made a reasonably good selection of universities.
Be aware, availability of funds in a MS program is very limited. I have written in ample words in this blog about the financial aspects, please read the articles.
For admission to a PhD program your essay must demonstrate your research interest which should be correlated with a professors research in these schools.

  84. Mr. NBS
can u answer my yesterdays queries

  85. Stud
You seem to be very impatient. It takes me some time to reply.
Yes you need to take at least one recommendation from you present employer since you are working for some time.
Remember this should be from your immediate boss or a colleague who has a regular contact with you.
Also the recommendation should be specific about your work and not vague. Preferably it should be related to the field of study you are applying to.
Since you are applying for PhD I suggest that you take two academic recommendations from the professors who have taught you.The same conditions about the quality of recommendations apply here as well.
Regarding your GRE score there are different norms being followed by different universities.
Some take the latest score into consideration and some consider the highest scores.
There are others who total up both the scores and consider the average. However I have observed that majority of them consider the highest scores for reviewing the application.
You must check on this from the schools where you intend applying.
A point to be noted is that you must attempt for GRE test for the second time only if you are confident that your score shall improve.
    Good Luck

    Which Cal State Univ ?????.
However I suggest you attempt one from the Cal State Group.
You can apply to IIT and Stevens as there is a reasonable chance to be admitted to these.
If you are daring and wish to take risk you can go for MI State as well but is difficult. Some people are lucky try if you want to.
You have not provided your TOEFL score. Remember there is a TOEFL cut off score for each university. Please apply only after checking on this.

Your GRE score is compatible with the requirement of the universities you mentioned.
Since you have not mentioned your academic grades I cannot give a considered reply. However academically if you score around 70% your chances are good to be admitted to the universities you mentioned. If you score between 60-70% your chance for admission is decent.

You can certainly get admission.Make a research proposal and get in touch with professors of the schools you intend applying.
Since academics,GRE and TOEFL are done with you should now concentrate on the other factors :
    1.Selection of compatible universities.
2.Contacting with professors with similar research interest as yours.
    2. Getting great recommendations.
    4. Essay or Statement of Purpose.

American Universities are offering PhD in three modes:
1.Direct PhD and no MS is available during the process.
    2. MS degree is offered while doing PhD after the completion of required credits.
3.You can join MS initially and then opt for PHD after it’s completion.

It is the first option you must be worried about.
If you are getting some stipend or assistantship for completion of your PhD the university may not allow you to drop midway after MS.

  108. I have very poor acads in my Engineering till my third year(47% or so). However, my final year shows a marked improvement taking my final year scores to 60%. But I have one paper left as a KT (backlog) in the seventh semester, because of which the eighth semester marksheet is not released (although I have passed it). The backlog results should be out in Feb. Now, when I apply to some colleges now, they would not see the improvement I have exhibited in the fial year. Instead, with the marks available till 3rd year, would they directly eliminate me or would they wait to get the entire BE marksheet to get the ull picture? I am asking this as some colleges have deadlines of February. Ideas anyone?

  109. I forgot to add that my GRE score is 1390 (V:630, Q:760) with TOEFL 116/120.

  110. Hi,

I found your website to be informative. I wanted some advise for Fall 2008 in the US. I plan to pursue MS in Computer Science.
    My background
    6yrs of relevant work experience.
    GRE Quants - 740
    GRE Verbal - 550
    GRE writing - 3.5
    Toelf - 270
UG BE in CS - 72% Final yr. 65% aggregate.

I applied to few univerisities for the spring session Virgnia Tech, MSU and cornell. I was not successful.
I now plan to apply for Fall 2008. I would appreciate if could advise me on target universities for my background. I was under the impression that my work experience will boost my application and so was targetig good schools, now I am not quite sure about it

    Thanks for your time.
    KMK.

Your GRE and TOEFL scores are decent. However with 47% in academics for the first six semesters it will be difficult to apply in a decent university.Let me tell you that most of the universities expect above 60% grades. However there are some which will consider 55% academics also. Even if you get 60% in last two semesters it works out to 53.5% for 8 semesters.
Here is what you should do:
    1. Your first concern should be to find schools willing to accept lower academics.Keep in mind each university has an academic cut off score and you should only apply to schools which are coming in your radar.
    2. Secondly work out your grade percentage for last 4 semesters and if it works out to be above 55% then your situation is salvaged a bit for there are schools which consider last four semesters grades.Find these out as well.
3.In my experience no decent school will substitute academic grades with a GRE score as such do not assume that a good GRE score will suffice for a poor GPA. However since your GRE is decent try convincing the admission committee about circumstances your circumstances which forced you to perform below your capability.Tell them about it in your essay keep in mind that it should seem to be a genuine reason.Perhaps this works for you have been showing improvement in your academics in each semester and have done well in GRE.
Now about your application to sent before February. If you had good academics I would have suggested that you apply without the last years transcripts for there are some schools who conditionally accept a candidate without the last two semesters transcripts. However your situation is different and under the circumstances I suggest that you do not apply without your last transcripts.
There are schools who accept applications till May or June try them.
    Good Luck
    NBS

  112. KMK
With your academics, test scores and experience I fail to understand as to how you missed the bus.
Choice of the schools, essay and recommendations may be the reasons.
Did you get proper recommendations? Since I do not know the type of work you perform I cannot suggest specifically. However if you are doing relevant work then two recommendations should have been from your supervisors. The recommendations should have highlighted the point that inspite of your six years Sabbath from academics you are still into computer science. Good recommendations are specific.
Similarly essay should be specific and detail the reasons for your rejoining academics after six years.
Now lastly the most important point - the choice of universities where you last applied.
Michigan State University although not highly ranked is notorious for low acceptance rate.Cornell of course is another class where your academics do not permit you to apply.
I am surprised about VTECH people do get admission here.
Your strategy for Fall 2008 application should be: Apply to a few safe universities, some with a decent chance of admission and some top ones where you will be admitted only if you are lucky.
Please keep in mind that almost all top schools ask for or recommend CS GRE subject test. Do not apply to these for your application shall not go beyond the preliminary examination unless you intend taking the test.
As a policy I do not suggest names of the universities. There is enough data available in this blog please go through it and select the universities.
If you send the names to me I will help you by suggesting your chances of admission.
    Good Luck

    Arizona University???
Is it Arizona State or University of Arizona?
My only comment about the universities selected by you is that all of them are very ambitious.
That is good for then only you will strive to bring out best in you. However select three safe universities as well.
Further take action on the following:
1.Get recommendations from present supervisors or people under whom you are conducting research. If they are some authority in their field of research so much the better.
    2. Get recommendation from some well known IIT professor with whom you have worked.
    3. As most of recommendations are vague I always suggest that some specific instances of your capability
    be cited in them.
4.Also find the professors, in the universities you have selected , with similar research interest as yours and write to them bringing up the subject of working under them.
5.What was your position in class in both BE and MTech if it is worth the mention get a certificate to the affect from the authorities of each of the institutes where you studied.
    6. Lastly write a strong essay citing specific research done by you.

Your GRE is decent. However academics are not very good.I presume 6.4 GPA not to be 64%.
You will get admission if you opt for schools matching your credentials.
    Do the following
1.Select schools of middle and low ranking only.
2.There are universities which accept low academics so go for them.Every university has a minimum requirement on this. These details are given here in this blog.
3.Also match your TOEFL score with the minimum required by the university.

  127. Hello. I am applying to universities in the USA and I have a small problem. When in my college, I had presented a total of 5 technical papers in techfests and presented seminars too. I have the ppt’s of some of those, which I can convert to PDF’s, but have neither hard nor soft copies of 3 of them as I seem to have misplaced them. These three are however very significant and I want to mention these in my application, as I feel they would showcase my extra-coursework activities/knowledge, while stressing on the fact that I am very keen on the course I plan to take up.
Would it be wise to mention these in my applications as achievements? Would the colleges ask for the original copies alongwith the degree certificates when I arrive there?
Thank you so much (in advance) for your response

  128. Rahul
I do not feel original documents will be demanded.
If you can arrange for some sort of proof that you had presented the papers it will help.May be some of your professors are aware of these presentations you may get these mentioned in your recommendations.
Also write a synopsis of the paper and provide this along with your application.
Another good thing would be to create a blog which carries the synopsis of your research papers. It may also detail your other relevant interest.
This blog should be without any frills and must look a professional but simple.

  132. Subhash
There are two aspects to your question :
1.Whether you will get admission in the universities you named.
    2. If you get admission whether assistantship shall be offered or not.
Let me begin with answering the first question.

    Reasonable chances of admission:
    Oklahoma State
    University of Alabama at Huntsville

Difficult but try a few. You may be lucky
    Texas A & M
    Iowa State
    North Carolina State

The above assumes that your TOEFL score is acceptable by the Universities.Verify the requirement of TOEFL before you start the application process.

Assistantship is a dicey subject.I have written enough about financial help in the blog. Please read it.
Sitting in your home country it may be difficult to get financial aid how ever when you reach USA there are ample opportunities to meet your study costs.
    Good luck

Without your GRE score it is difficult to predict your chance of admission.
I can only say that many schools have a minimum requirement of GPA and for an Indian student in most of the schools it is 60%. So my first advice is to verify this before you proceed.
According to my reckoning your chances of admission are as under:

Difficult. Try a few you may be lucky.
1.Tisch School of Arts ,New York Univ.
2.School of Design, Carnegie Mellon Master in Design
    3. Institute of Design, IIT (Chicago)
    4. Indiana University

    Reasonable Chance of Admission.
    5. California State University -Sacramento- MS {CS}
    6 California State University - Long Beach)- MS {CS}
    7. Bradley University - MS {CS}

    Good Luck

I have explained earlier also that for the names of schools one has to locate these oneself. Everything required is given in this blog help yourself.
Regarding retaking GRE I can only say that since your GPA is low unless you can markedly improve the score it is not advisable to take it again.
    Good Luck

    The two questions you raise;
    1. List of universities you should apply to.
2.Will you get funds for studies?
are perennial being raised by everybody.
As explained elsewhere in this blog I do not suggest the names of universities where you should apply. Everything required to select universities is given here. Please look at the blog.
I have also written several times about the funds.
Let me explain in clear terms that for an average applicant sitting in his home country it may be difficult to get funds for studies. However if once he reaches USA there are several options to cover this up.
Please read further about these two points in the blog. If you still need any help please do write again.

  145. Hi Nbs,

Thanks a lot for providing a clear cut idea …. One more thing i wanted to know is most of these schools did not mention any cut off requirement .ID @ IIT said 3.0 but i spoke to one of the alumni there and he told me that if i have a good portfolio IIt would be glad to take me even if i had low acads. That said ,only IIt required this wheras the others Tisch ,Carnegie and Indiana didnt mention this.My Questions is how flexible are they regarding acads and Will a gr8 portfolio and gr8 project help me in alleviating my chace…..

Secondly Tisch(my dream school) needs only TOFEl scores …so what do you think my chances are…??

Thirdly How much will arrears damage your academic credentials when u convert to GPA …??

Sorry to bother you once again and thanks for the luck :)

  146. my gre score is 1140

i hav 1.5 yrs work experience till now.

is my gre score enough for getting admission in to a good university?
I want to try 2008 august admission;is there time still left (deadlines)?
can u suggest me some good colleges and their deadlines?

  148. SStud

Adopt the following strategy to finally select the universities for appplying.
1.You have mentioned that you are also interested in software engineering. If it is available in the universities you have mentioned please apply to this program as your GRE score is not compatible for the universities you have mentioned.
2.Check whether computer science subject test is required for the universities you have selected.Eliminate the ones demanding it.
3.Similarly check on the TOEFL score required and discard the schools asking for more than your score of 96.
Now about the universities you have mentioned. I have labeled them as under:
    Ambitious
    Rutgers
    Ohio State
    Indiana Bloomington
    University of Illinois - Chicago
    University of Florida - Gainesville
    NCSU
    University of Massachusetts - Amherst
    SUNY- Stony Brook
    University at Buffalo
    University of Rochester
    University of Utah

Try it. You may be lucky
    University of Minnesota (software engineering)

    Reasonable chances of Admission
    University of Texas - Dallas
    University of Texas - Arlington
    Colorado School of Mines
University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill

Regarding GPA ,GRE and TOEFL scores I would say that universities are not flexible unless some professor likes your portfolio and pursues your case.
Steps taken by the universities to process the applications are elaborated else where in the blog. Read the post.
Keep in mind that your GPA is 59.32% and as such marginally less than 60%.I assume that when converted to point system it should be able to meet the requirement.
Now about your dream university you must try it. As I have been saying all along one may be lucky.

Your GRE score is reasonable. However your GPA is good. As such there should not be any difficulty to get admission.

  152. Hi NBS. My acads are not good (I have had a 2 year drop in my B.E.) and they are the only things that may have any negative effect in my admission, as my GRE (1390) and TOEFL(116) scores are good.
I was wondering if I should do a Ph.D so that it can dwarf the effect of my drop (late pass-out). Let me know about your opinion on this.
Also, I want to know what Ph.D is all about. I know this question may sound silly, but I need to clear any doubts as it would be an important decision for me to take. Is it that one needs to “discover”/”invent” something to get a Ph.D.? What does it involve apart from the detailed study of a certain branch?
Please give me any other details you deem necessary.
    Thanks!

  153. Why do some universities ask for TWO copies of transcripts? One should suffice right? What would they do with the other?

  154. Currently I am in the final year BE - ECE. My GRE marks have been V 410, Q 740 and AW 6. In TOEFL (Internet based test) I got 103. The aggregate marks of the six semsters of the UG programme are 71.8%. What are my ’safe’ and ‘may be’ universities for MS in EE?

Decide on what you want to do MS or PhD.
For PhD you need a good GPA and if you want to do it take some courses to improve your GPA.
You must be prepared to devote further 5-6 years for the completion of PhD.
Given the above explanation I would suggest that you go for a MS program. If you choose your universities prudently you will get admission. Your having spent two extra years for under graduation should not hinder your chances of admission to a decent university.
    Good Luck
    NBS

  160. Neha
Your application is processed at two levels.
    1.Graduate School of the university.
2.Department in which you want to study.
In order to save time and simultaneously process the application universities ask for two copies of transcripts.
    The graduate school needs
1.Your application.Which is normally submitted online.
    2.Application fee.
    3.Official GRE and TOEFL scores.
    4.Official Transcripts
    The Department asks for:
    1.Application
    2.Copies of Transcripts
3.GRE and TOEFL score ( a photostat copy will suffice)
    4.Recommendations
    5.Essay or Statement of Purpose.

I am not clear. Do you want to go for MBA or MS?
Most of the universities want GMAT scores for MBA unless you want to go for a joint program of Biotech/MBA.
    My comments :
About the selection of your universities that they are very low rated .May be because you want to do MBA with GRE so you have selected these.
With your academics and work experience you can go to better schools which would ensure a better career for you.
My advice take GMAT or select Techno- MBA program in better schools accepting GRE.

  165. Thanks so much for your advise NBS.
Actually I also wanted to ask you what you think about my choice of colleges.
I’m applying to some of these colleges under the telcom program (if offered).
Again, my GRE score is 1390 (V:630, Q:760) and TOEFL score is 116, with a B.E. aggregate of just above 55%. I have presented 6-7 technical papers and given seminars which I will be mentioning in my application.
    The universities are as under:
    1. Worcester Polytechnic Institute

    2. Polytechnic University
    3. Univ of Missouri - Kansas City
    4. UPenn (TCOM)

  166. To NBS:

This website is awesome. Well I have some questions.
    These are my Stats:

    GRE: Q 780 V 630 Awa 3.5
    TOEFL iBT: 107

    Undergraduate GPA: 4.94/5.00
Undergraduate college: Top telecommunications university in Russia. I wonder if it is known outside.
    Major: Telecommunication Engineering
    Applying for: PhD in Telecomms

presently, an undergraduate RA in my university and research so far is great.
Summer 2007: Research intern with Nortel Networks
Summer 2006: more of an undergraduate research engineer -assisted mainly in research. That was while I was still a sophomore.

I have issues about where to apply to:

I have already applied to Stanford, MIT (EECS and Aeronauticals), UT at Austin and U of Toronto.

I need two more unis to add as a safety school but can’t decide which to choose.

Would my low AWA score have an adverse effect on me? Can you please evaluate my chances and suggest what I do so as to get a nice school.

Put into consideration that I am Russian and English is my second language, and not a medium of instruction in my academic life.

  167. Rahul

I again repeat. Ascertain whether the university accepts a grade lower than 60% before applying. Why don’t you write to them and get the exact information ?
Assuming that 55% is acceptable I am grouping the universities according to your chances of admission:

    Reasonable Chance
    Worcester Polytechnic Institute
    Polytechnic University
    San Jose State University
    IIT
    GMU
    Univ of Louisiana Lafayette
    University of Central Florida
Univ of Missouri - Kansas City
    Northeastern
    SMU
    USC

    Difficult
    UPenn
    UPitt
RIT. It has a strong Telecom program and is choosey.
    Syracuse

Rahul I have been stressing again and again that a candidate’s eligibility for admission is considered at two levels :
1.Graduate School considers the tangible factors only.
Every Graduate school has a minimum requirementof GRE,TOEFL scores and GPA. Only those applications are forwarded to the department, for the final decision, which meet the minimum criteria.Let me remind you that this process is carried out by clerical staff and these people are not concerned about your high scores.Application of every candidate who meets the minimum eligibility criteria is forwarded to the department in a tabulated form used for consideration by the department.
2.The department considers the intangible factors like Recommendations and Essay along with the tangible ones.

Thus there are greater chances of rejection of an application if it does not meet the minimum criteria for the intangible factors will not come in play at the graduate school level.
This is the reason I ask that you:
1.Check with the university whether they will accept your academic score.
2.Correspond with a professor to get a favorable response from him.

    Good Luck
    NBS

  168. Eyoo
    You have impressive credentials.
Stop worrying about your being Russian and the medium of instruction being in another language apart from English.
Your TOEFL and GRE scores should dispel this notion.
    a. My concern would be your lack of real time research, with some published papers,or your being a member of a research team having solid reputation. I do not know much about Russian Institutes and as such cannot comment about this.
If you have worked under somebody having world class reputation then get a recommendation from him.
Again as I always suggest that recommendations should specifically cite your contribution towards the research. It should not be general.
b.Your not having taken GRE subject test. Several top universities say they do not need subject GRE or for that matter GRE even. However I am of the firm belief that having done well in these tests always helps for it makes the decision process easier for the admission committee.
c.Contact some professors in these schools having similar interest as yours. If you get a favorable responce it will go a long way.
d.Your essay should spell out the kind of research you want to pursue.
    e. Lastly you must apply to some universities within ranking of 10-30.
    Good Luck.
    NBS

  169. Thanks NBS. Your reply was very insightful and at the same time, incited some useful worries. I have already applied to MIT(EECS and Aeronautical Dept.), Stanford (EE), UT at Austin and U of Toronto. The rankings which I just checked showed these schools to be highly ranked. Wow, will magic occur here?

Nevertheless, I already contacted professors in these universities and they all encouraged me to apply. We corresponded couple of times but then, my AWA result was not out. I have singled out Washington university in St. Louis and University of California, Irvine as safety nets. Hmm, are they really safety nets?

Once again, thanks for your invaluable suggestions and for setting up this site. I have learnt a lot through your previous replies.

  170. Between University of Texas Arlington and University of Texas Dallas, which one is better for MS in EE in terms of academics, industrial training and placements or any other factor which you may like me to take into consideration?

  179. Dear NBS,
I have some queries regarding my admission to US universities in the field of Electrical/Electronics Engineering, i would be delighted if you reply me early about this. I have received Fulbright scholarship for studies to US. however just before my application to US universities my GRE validity time was over so i have retaken my GRE. I would request you to please analyse my profile and conclude my chances to the following universities.
My GPA : 3.46 out of a total of 4 (Electronic Engineering)
    My GRE previous (uptil august 2007) : Q790, V580, A610
    My new GRE (Dec 2007): Q 740, V380, AWA 4.0
    Toefl: 267

I would like to add that my university is almost the top ranked in my country. Considering my SOP and recommendations to be above average. I have 3+ years of work experience
Please reckon my chances of admission to MS/PhD ECE deptt of :
    University of Wisconsin Madison;
    University of Massachusetts Amherst;
    Texas A & M university ,College Station;
    University of Florida
George Washington University ,College of Science & Engg.

As these are the places where Fulbright people have applied to on my behalf. Also please also tell me which of the GRE scores will be used for admission purposes (New or Old and best section score or best whole attempt score ) .

    Hoping for a detailed reply.

  180. Hi NBS,

I have the following scores: Q-770, V-700, AWA-3.5. In addition, I have 7+ years work experience in IT and 66% in BE(Electrical) . Will my AWA score - which I badly messed up for some reason - be a severe disadvantage for applying to the top 50 US universities for MS/Phd in CS? My TOEFL results are still awaited.

I will have two recos from my immediate managers at work and one from my professor. I am hoping to write a good SOP focusing on my work experiences.

    Thinking of applying to:
    1. Michigan, Ann Arbor
    2. Maryland, College Park
    3. Wisconsin, Madison
    4. Minnesota Twin Cities.

    Regards,
    Mark

Your GRE score is not compatible with your 85% BE grades.
If you want a better university with some prospect of financial help do retake GRE test.
Yes relevant work experience does help.

    You have good credentials.
Regarding the top universities please look into the following
    1. Most of these universities do not have Spring intake.
    2. Even if they have spring admission you will not be
considered for financial help as this is usually offered for Fall admission only.
    3. Although not required some of the top universities do prefer candidates having GRE Subject Test scores.
4.You have not mentioned your TOEFL score. Let me remind you that universities do have a TOEFL cut off score and
you must ascertain that you meet this requirement.

Assuming that you have undertaken the above exercise
    your universities are grouped below:

    Good Chance
    University of Southern California
    Virginia Tech

    Reasonable Chance
    Purdue University
    University of Wisconsin, Madison
    Georgia Tech

  200. Hey,

I graduated from Quinnipiac University with a 3.52, double major in history and political science (won most outstanding senior in). I bombed the GRE’s the first time, didn’t get into any grad schools. Instead I lived in DC for a year and did political work, and have been working in the Department of Anthropology at Yale since last December. I am going to stay here until the fall of 2009 in the hopes of building my resume and perhaps getting a recommendation letter from the Dean.

    I retook the gre last year, got a 570v 530q, 4.5a.

I am looking to go to graduate school for political science (or history, but the language requirements are frequently daunting, and I can’t do math or speak a lick of anything but English), so political science it is. The schools I am currently looking at are Boston College, American University, George Washington University, Yale, Harvard, Duke, Stony Brook, George Mason, Boston University, Georgetown.

My goal is to get a PH.D to be a teacher, and I may apply to the masters programs at each school first, considering my failures at being accepted in the past. 1. Are there any other schools that I should consider applying too 2. Should I take the GRE again? 3. Is there anything else you would recommend to increase my chances of getting in, especially to a New England school (Boston College/Yale/Harvard).

    Thanks

  201. hi,

i got an ee bsc. degree with 2.4/4 gpa.. gre is 530v-760q and toefl is 108/120 (iBT)
i was intending to pursue an m.sc degree in electronics and i tried several places but my applications were turned down..
if it was up to me, i could continue applying indefinitely and build up an alternate transcript, accumulate working experience along the way.. but my main problem is recommendations.. my instructors don’t really care to recommend me anywhere, much less spend time talking to me.. so even if i manage to get recommendations from them for future applications, they will probably be more destructive than they are worth.. which translates into me giving up on m.sc..
i don’t know what kind of advice (if any) i am expecting.. don’t really know why my gpa turned out to be this low.. didn’t party my ass off, attended 2/3 of classes throughout my undergrad.. probably the lesson i will take away with me from this and hopefully teach prospective students; “do not take classes just because they interest you.. if they are likely to strain you and bring down your gpa, go for that easy class everyone is taking.. here is a great example; don’t take quantum mechanics just because you are fascinated with relativity.. if the math overwhelms you, you won’t get beyond a B-.. go for that linear algebra course that people got As from without ever seeing the teacher’s face..”

anyway.. enough rambling.. don’t follow my example though.. never give up.. i’m just too tired..

    Norm
    Here is my reply.
Do not aspire to go to a top school. With your GPA you can only go to a second or third tier school.
There are schools which do not ask for recommendations. Look for them

A clarification would be most helpful.

  216. Hi,

A very Specific question - something i cannot find online - i have completed my Bachelors in Business Management, and have successfully got addmissions into University of Leeds,UK and Monash University, Australia for Masters in Finance.

Now, both universities seem to be fairly decently ranked overall; and seems on par. What i am unable to decide is which would be a better university for Finance Courses, Leeds or Monash ?

Things that i am looking at are - general recognition and appreciation of degree, future value and employment opportunites.

    Thanks !
    Rishi

    Rishi
You have to decide where you want to settle down after the completion of your degree. If you want to settle in UK than Leeds will be a good option. However,if you want to live in Australia than go for Monash.
I believe that Europe will have better job opportunities.

    Univ of BC

  225. Hi,
I have a BE in Electrical Engg but I have been working for the last 3 years in the IT industry. I want to pursue a MS in Computer Science in Fall 2009. So I’ll be giving the CS subject test.

My Electrical Engg score was 61%.
I am yet to give my GRE tests, but I have given some mock tests and I expect the following scores (my guesses are genrally fairly accurate):
    GRE Quant: 780-800
    GRE Verbal: 550-580
GRE CS Subject Test: 90-95 percentile.

    I have a few questions:
    1) Should I get recos from my electrical engg profs? I can get recos from my company managers which can highlight that my work was extremely technical in nature. (It actually was :)

    2) How important is Verbal and Analytical Writing section? Should a score of 550 and 3 be enough?

    3) Considering that my bachelor is not in CS, what kind of universities should I be aiming at? Assuming that I get the scores I mentioned above, I would be looking at schools like:
    a. U MI Ann Arbor
    b. UCLA
    c. Duke
    d. GTech
    e. U Arizona
    f. U SC
As you can see, I am looking at universities with rankings ranging from 10-30.
I am going to apply to about 8-9 schools. I’ll spread the applications as following:
2 - Schools with ranking 1 to 10 (Just in case)
    5 - Schools with ranking 11 to 30 (Hopeful)
    2 - Schools with ranking 40 to 50 (Assured)

Are these reasonable expectations or should I look at schools with lower ranking?

    Thanks,
    Max

P.S. The work you have put into this blog is greatly appreciated. Your blog is very helpful indeed.

Do take GRE again if you are confident that your verbal score will improve but in the process do not reduce your Quantitative score.
Otherwise if you write a good explanation for a low GRE score it would help.

You deserve to have a better GRE score. Please retake it.
Your 78% undergraduate score qualifies you for better schools if only you improve your GRE score.

  244. Hello,
I am a masters in microbiology from mumbai university. I am in US on H4 dependent visa.
I wish to do my MS in biotech from John Hopkins University, MD.
Do i need to change my visa status?
What are the exams i need to give (GRE, TOEFL, etc).
What other documents do i need to require?
I scored an aggregate of 66.3% in BSc microbiology, and an aggregate of 57.4 in MSc microbiology.

What are my chances of getting an admission there?

    Rehana
Yes you can study after changing your visa status from H4 to F1.
You will have to take GRE and TOEFL tests.
Admission to top programs depends on several factors like GPA,Test scores,Essay, recommendations and above all your research interest being compatible with the research being done at the school.
As such I will not be able to comment on your chances of admission with the data available at this time.

    1.B.E(mechanical Engg) 80% with Distinction,
    2.gre - 1000(770q+230v),

My question is whether I have to retake GRE or use the same score,to get in to some decent universities(like TAMU College Station,Auburn, UFL , NCSU ,Rochester) for pursuing MS in Industrial/Mechanical)??

    Ramanathan
You may get admission in some of the schools you mention. As you have very decent undergraduate grades I would recommend that you retake GRE. Make sure of scoring above 1200.This will put you in a higher league and you may even try for top ranked schools.

  250. Hello Sir,

I have completed my undergraduation in Mechanival Engineering with a GPA of 3+, with a GPA of 3.6 in my last two yrs of engineering. I have a work- exp of 3 years as a design engineer in a well-known MNC. My GRE score is 1270 ( Q-750, V- 520, AWA- 3.5), TOEFL (111). I have already applied to Vtech- Industrial Engg, UVA- Systems Engg, GMU- Systems Engg and VCU- Mechanical Engg. Results for Vtech and UVA are awaited while The rest two have already admitted me. GMU denied me funding for this sem( the prof says that I can get funding from next sem) while VCU gave me $15k a year as an RA. What are the possibilities of getting an admit from UVA and Vtech? In case I am denied, What to choose- VCU or GMU?

  251. Hi,
I am at a preliminary stage of information gathering to find out my odds of getting admitted to a funded PhD.
    About myself:
I have completed my Masters – International Finance (MFin) from the University of Glasgow, UK and right now I am working with a leading FMCG company in India over a couple of projects related to forex and M&A activity as an intern.
I also did my MBA (spl. - marketing) from Delhi, India and worked in the media/PR industry for couple of years before pursuing my MFin (mentioned above).

Now, I want to do a PhD in qualitative finance/international business from a decent university in the North America/Western Europe region. However, I can only take it up if it is a funded place.
My problem is that my grades are not that good, which might affect my chances of getting a funded PhD place in a university. Also, so many grading translations (GPA) confuse me as I cannot determine that whether my grades translate into a GPA of 3 something or below that.

My aggregate in MBA was 67% with advanced semesters showing a better percentage than earlier semesters. The grades in MFin are as below:
International Financial Accounting for MNCs A (excellent)
International Banking & Financial Markets B (very good)
    International Corporate Finance B
    International Financial Management B
    International Capital Markets B
    Environment of International Business B
    Research Methodology B
    Statistics D (satisfactory)
    Dissertation C (good)

I am looking for some feedback to decide that whether or not I stand a chance and should consider applying.
Also, other than the grades, I have been very active in extra-curricular activities and have been the student representative in my entire undergrad and post grad degree courses. I can rely on some brilliant references from my professors and employers. I would also seek a rough idea of a decent GMAT/GRE score to support my application.

Being honest, I am not focussing on the best of the universities and you can keep that in mind while evaluating my chances. However, I need a funded PhD and would highly appreciate some feedback on the universities I shall think about.
    All comments are welcome

At the outset let me point out getting financial help from a university is very tricky.Especially for international students . To my reckoning almost 80% of applicants do not get support from the university in initial stage. However, quite a number of them are supported after 1st or 2nd semesters.
So be prepared to either make an alternative arrangement or finance the studies yourself. I am pointing this out since you are going to spend a substantial amount of money on your applications and you should initiate the process only if you have other arrangements.Be it said that if you get financial help from the university it will be a bonus.
Secondly, financial help will be provided only if you have some published papers or have a record of research that can be proved. There are several articles in the blog on this aspect. Please go through them.
    Good Luck

This is Swapnil again. I have some doubts :
    1. As my GRE score is low (1140) in which fields should I work hard or concentrate more to make my admission in high universities much easier.
    2. As I know GRE score is not only single point in consideration. Would you please let me know some other ways through which I can recover the damage caused by low GRE score??
    3. How much the work experience and strong reccomandation play imp. role?
    4. Does more certifications in computer stream will make my SOP significantly strong ?
Plz reply to me so that I can more focus on that and try for much better admission.

  261. Warm Hello,

The fact is that I already hold an MBA, with specialization in Finance. Also I’m a Mechanical Engineering Graduate from an engineering college of repute in India.

Now to further my education I want to pursue a Masters in Finance (or related courses) from a school outside India. I currently have a work-ex. of 16 months in a major firm in India in the field of strategy formulation.

    My Credentials are -
    B.E.(Punjab Engg. College) - 64%
    MBA (UBS, Chandigarh) - 61%
    GMAT - 680(Q50 V36)
    TOEFL - 105
    CAT(if it can help) - 99.37 pt
Currently Enrolled for CFA - LEVEL 1

Strong credentials in Maths throughout accompanied with a teaching experience of Mathematics as well as a couple of projects in the said field.

I have a few universities in mind, which do not require work-ex. as a pre-requisite but generally have an inclination for high GMAT scores(in the range 710 or above).

Courses I am aspiring for -

    MFE - Oxford University
    M.Fin. - Princeton University
    M.Fin. - LBS
    MFE - Berkeley, Haas

The thing here is that I do not want to have a collection of second-rung schools in my profile all my life. I want to make it big this time or try again with a better profile later.

I need your opinion in this concern that what are the odds in favor of me making it to the above said courses. And if you think things can be worked out, I think its time to take a flight with the application process.

    Eagerly awaiting your reply.

    Shekhar Dutt.

In my view your GPA is low for Rice University. However you may slide through if your GRE is strong.
If your GPA for the last 2 semesters is above 3.5 and if your experience is in the same field you may try.

Getting admission depends on several factors especially for a PhD program. These have been brought out several times in my earlier posts.
While your academics seem to be honorable you lack research experience which a PhD candidate is expected to have.
If you want to apply to the schools you have mentioned I suggest that you spend the next two years to develop your profile.
1.Spend time on academic research on which you want to work further for your PhD thesis.
2.Write some papers on the subject you want to further work on. Try publishing these papers and if that is not possible get peer reviews.
3.Contact professors who are doing research in the same subject at the schools of your interest.

All that I have said does not mean that you will not get admission in a school if you try now. It simply implies that chances are less that you will get admission with some financial help.

    Good Luck

There are two articles in this blog which can help you :
‘European MBA Programs with a GMAT Waiver or MBA without GMAT’
and ‘Business Programs with a GMAT Waiver Or MBA without GMAT’
Some of these schools offer PhD with finance specialization.

Kindly let me know if I can get into good universities with my current GRE score. I am particularly concerned about my
Verbal score. I did read your blog about getting into universities with low GRE score. But, Sir, kindly let me know if 410 in verbal is low or medium for Electronics stream.
I checked with one of the Ivy league institutes-Georgia Tech, which had a cut off verbal score of 400 and an average of 540.
I am not particular about retaking the GRE for I am not very sure of improving in Verbal.
I am planning to join for the fall 2010 term.
With the above profile can I target top 20 colleges in my stream.
    Thanking you for this forum.

With your credentials I would have retaken GRE and tried for top 10 schools. There is an article in this blog suggesting situations when you should retake GRE. Please read it.
If you are confident that your GRE Q score will not come down in your second attempt please retake the test.
    Good Luck

  270. Warm greetings.

I truly hope you can give me some kind of indication regarding my forthcoming applications to Political Science PhD programs.

I just took the GRE today. After practicing a lot, I did MUCH lower than my practice tests indicate I would (I had some test anxiety and ran out of time in the verbal). During practice, I consistently got 650-680 in verbal. But here are my actual GRE scores as of today:

    690 Quant
    580 Verbal
6.0 Analytical (don’t know for sure yet, but have taken the GRE twice way in the past and always get a 6)

Undergrad: University of Michigan (Political Science and Modern Western European Studies) - 3.86 GPA, High Distinction

Grad: M.A. from George Washington University in Political Management - 3.73 GPA

More Grad: teaching certificate from Pace University in adolescent education - 3.74 GPA

I have been teaching AP Government and Economics at a high school in Brooklyn for a few years through Teach for America

I have four additional years of work experience in the field of campaign politics in Washington, DC for prominent politicians.

I have some experience doing academic research in political science (worked for a few professors).

I have lined up three excellent recommendation letters from academic-types in political science.

    I wish to apply to:
    1) Yale
    2) Columbia
    3) NYU
    4) Stony Brook
    5) New School
    6) CUNY
    7) Fordham

Any thoughts? I can take the GRE again one more time–in November–before applications are due. While I feel I could score up to 60-100 points better in verbal, I’m not sure what to do.

Do I have a chance to get into those schools? Thanks.

    Matt

  272. I took the gre recently and was disappointed with my verbal score.
    GRE— Q 790, V 440 , I am expecting a 5 or 5.5 in AWA.
    My Teofl score is 113/120.

I have 4 years of software development experience. I will be getting 3 strong recommendation letters. I am currently preparing my SOP and resume.

My undergraduate degree is in Electrical and Electronics engineering from VTU, Karnataka. I have a 71% aggregate (all 4 years). and 74.5% aggregate (last 2 years).

I intend to pursue an M.S in Computer Science.

I selected my list of universities earlier but now i fear that some of them may be out of my reach.

    1. University of Utah
    2. Columbia
    3. North Carolina State University
    4. University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
    5. University of Wisconson Madison :
    6. Purdue,West Lafayette
    7. University of Arizona, Tucson
    8. Arizona State University
    9. University of Colarado , boulder
    10. University of Washington

I would like to know your opinion on what chances I stand for admission into these schools.Would a poor verbal score alone put me out of the running?..
