GMAT and it’s Role in the Admission Process

GISMA Business School , Germany, launched a study in order to find out.
A comparison of GMAT scores and GPAs (grade point averages) for GISMA’s full-time MBA classes from 2003 through 2006 revealed there is not a significant correlation.
Academic performance by students who had achieved modest GMAT scores in the range of 600 (out of 800 possible points) was found to be on a par with that of fellow students whose GMAT scores came in at a very good 740 points, and vice versa. The graph clearly shows this lack of correlation between GMAT and GPA.
Then one can ask :
Why do business schools attach such great importance to GMAT scores?
Firstly GMAT reveals the mathematical talents of students which plays an important part in the study of Quantitative Methods, Accounting and Financial Management. Let us also note that other traits in a student also play a major role, for example leadership ability, strategic thinking, marketing and communication skills, creativity and persuasiveness – none of which are assessed by the GMAT.
What role GMAT plays in the Admission decision?
Admissions staff has a candidates: Curriculum Vitae,GPA details,Recommendations,Essays,TOEFL scores,GRE scores to base it’s admission decision
From the above TOEFL ,GPA and GRE are the only ones which are quantifiable.
However TOEFL tests English capability only.
GPA pattern may vary from country to country and even from one institution to another. It has to be first converted to a comparable scale before it is used.
Still it will not be flawless since a GPA of a student of mathematics background and an English candidate are not comparable.
Thus GRE score is the only leveler for candidates of different background that provides objective comparison.
