University of Virginia

We do not look favorably upon applicants whose overall GPA is less than 3.20 or who have a
combined verbal and quantitative GRE score of less than 1200. Applications with GPA < 3.0 and GREs
< 1100 are almost always rejected. The three year rolling average for applicant GREs is 1290 and for
admitted students is 1350. Average GRE/GPA data for the past 8 years are available at the end of this
document. Foreign applicants whose native language is not English must take the TOEFL and attain a
score of 600 (paper) or 250 (computer) or 90 (IBT), unless they have an undergraduate degree from a US
institution. We also prefer foreign students to have a TWE over 5.0.

University of California -Berkeley

GRE averages among the students recently accepted: 688, 722, and 5.5.

Emory University

Admissions decisions are based upon careful review of all five components of the application: previous academic record, letters of recommendation, GRE scores, relevant personal experience, and the personal statement. The average combined verbal and quantitative GRE score for students entering the program is around 1300. Minimum qualifications for admission include GRE scores at or above the fiftieth percentile on all three portions of the exam and an undergraduate grade average of B or higher.

University of Chicago

Historically, the size of the entering class has ranged between 15-20 students per year. In our admissions process, the department considers the entire application: the letters of recommendation, academic background, GRE scores, writing sample, any work experience, and the fit of the candidate with the strengths of the program. In addition to the University of Chicago’s standard application form, all applicants (including international students) must submit scores from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). LSAT or GMAT scores are not acceptable. The GRE score is only one of a number of criteria that the department considers when evaluating applicants; we do not use strict score cutoffs in our evaluation. The average GRE scores for those admitted last year were 666 Verbal, 732 Quantitative, and 5.3 Analytic. Applicants must also submit a 10-20-page writing sample, perhaps from a seminar paper, senior thesis or M.A. thesis. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries must also submit TOEFL scores of a minimum of 60 on each section and a recommended overall score of 600, on the paper version, and a minimum of 25 in each section and an overall score of 250 for the computer version. Our students also generally have an undergraduate G.P.A. of 3.6 (on a 4.0-point scale) and above.

University of Michigan-Ann Arbor

The Department received approximately 315 applications for entry into the program in the fall of 2006. Of those, 39 were accepted. Their mean undergraduate grade point average was 3.66 on a 4-point scale. The mean GRE scores were 667 verbal, 729 quantitative and 6 analytical. The University of Michigan has made a commitment to create a diverse intellectual community. As a result, the Department of Political Science has no strict cutoffs for either GPA or GRE scores. We are looking for intelligent and motivated scholars. We tend to admit students with good grades in challenging courses, who have solid test scores and the ability to do both qualitative and quantitative research.

University of Colorado - Boulder

A cumulative undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 (out of 4.0) from an accredited university in the United States, or equivalent credentials from a non-U.S. institution, or a graduate cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale
A cumulative score on the Graduate Record Examination of at least 1100 (verbal + quantitative), with a score of at least 500 on the verbal examination. Students not meeting the GRE requirements are advised to resubmit their application after retaking the examinations and obtaining satisfactory scores

Johns Hopkins University

The following statistics are representative of enrolled students whose native language is English. The average GRE Verbal score is 630, with the middle 50% of enrolled students achieving a range of 580 to 680. The average GRE Quantitative score is 690, with the middle 50% ranging from 650 to 750. The average GMAT score is 630, with a range of 510 to 760. A TOEFL score of at least 600 for the paper-based exam, 250 for the computer-based exam or 100 for the internet-based exam is required of all applicants who have spent less than two years at an institution where English is the medium of instruction and whose native language is not English. Students who choose to submit the IELTS exam results must meet a minimum of 7.0.

The average GPA of the 2005 incoming class was approximately 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, with a range of 2.4 to 4.0. The middle 50% of enrolled students acheived GPAs from 3.3 to 3.7. Keep in mind, though, that the admissions committee is much more interested in the details of your transcript than in the total GPA. Weak grades in your freshman year, or in an unrelated class (like Chemistry, for example), will not greatly affect your chances for admission. However, a weak grade in a political science or economics course can affect your competitiveness even if the overall GPA appears to be good.

Florida State University

The Department requires a minimum combined quantitative and verbal GRE of 1100 with no less than 500 on either section and an overall GPA of 3.0 during the last two years of coursework. However, meeting the minimum requirements for GRE and GPA is not a guarantee of admission or funding. We review many applications each year and rank them according to a range of factors, including letters of recommendation, personal statements, research interests and career goals. We purposefully limit the number of students we accept to ensure that each student gets the personal attention they deserve in a high quality Ph.D. program.
The profile of students admitted and offered funding for 2007/2008:

  25th Percentile Median 75th Percentile
GRE Score 1252 1315 1360
GPA 3.25 3.72 3.90

Claremont Graduate University

We would expect a student who completed a degree in the U.S. to achieve a minimum of approximately 500 on both the verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE. Obviously, the closer the scores are towards 800 in each category, the more competitive an application becomes. There are, of course, many factors that are taken into consideration when reviewing test results.

University of Notre Dame

The median GRE scores for the 2005 cohort of graduate students (the average scores were similar):
Verbal 700
Quantitative 720
Analytical 690 or Analytical Writing 6.0
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
The Graduate School at the University advises applicants that a successful TOEFL score is at least 600 on the paper-based exam and 25 on the computer-based exam
